Common cause for invalid email error (besides invalid spelling) is hidden spaces or use of commas. Check for those when you try again.

Robert, Here in the desert there are few places where people jealously guard old workings. It’s good advise to study the mining laws in any state prior to prospecting and avoid trouble by being informed. There are a variety of types of claims and they all bear different types of interests. If one knows the legal background of the state’s mining laws one should have little difficulty with any situation. The greatest problem in this area is that of uninformed seekers assuming abandonment of interest or worse, trespassing on and stealing gear from patented claims. I have to disagree that all gold bearing lands have been claimed. A short investigation of the available BLM and USGS maps will demonstrate that there are huge areas adjacent to old patented claims that are available and most likely have gold available. That coupled with a visit to your county recorder will demonstrate any other interests in an area.. Fact is, most people fail to do the homework?

I agree John, the procedure you mention is how I stumbled on a great claim that just became available. All you need to be is persistent and perform due diligence to obtain the legal claim rights when they become overdue for renewal. Claim jumping is illegal.

Hi Robert… After months (not years) of trying to find “available” land to do some recreational panning, etc. I was held at gun point, had dogs turned loose on me and run over by a horse and rider screaming and yelling about laws and rights, etc. Clubs can be very “Clickish” and their claims are HEAVILY worked over and over and over. Finally, trying to do your own research takes more time than most common people have. I’ve taken up recreational mining for fish with a pole, bait/lures and gadgets that release and accumulate a nylon type string. I buy a license, sit on a bank in a comfortable chair, put on my ear phones and crank my favorite SRV, Eagles, Beach Boys, Boston, etc. music. After awhile I break out a small two burner camp stove, git my frying pan out, through on some chopped potatoes, next a Porterhouse and pop a little suds… Ahhhh. No one chasing me, no back ache, no gun barrels to look down and ops, gotta go, gotta bite…

jess. thanks for this information. I’m always learning. I’ve asked this question before but you haven’t answered to my knowledge. could you show and explain what i should look for when I’m looking for a place to prospect? what i am looking for is the marker that marks where an existing mine or claim is. is it a stick standing up on the four corners of a claim or is it a metal tag imbedded in concrete on the four corners? what marks a claim? how big is a claim? thanks for your answers. bob

They can be anything depending on what the laws are where you are at.
Most claim markers are some sort of stake/post with the claim owner info
encased on the post, accessible to everyone and visible to everyone.

I have also seen pvc pipe embedded into concrete marking the site.

I personally have not seen or found markers at all 4 corners of a claim yet,
most will mark the trail leading to the claim and or where the claim starts.

Claims can be small or big, it depends on whether the claim owner has
purchased multiple claims side by side but usually they are 20 acres
      in size.

Here is a page with the definitions explained for clarity on what type of claim,
and how it should be marked.

      Hope that Helps,
      Joe
